In simple terms, user-agent is a tool used by the user to carry out a function. For example, a user makes use of thunderbird to send, receive and manage mails. Here thunderbird is considered to be a user agent.  User agents are present in the client side of the network. The user agent sends the user agent strings to the server. The user agent string contains several piece of information which can be manipulated.
