tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

I have downloaded a tar file, but when i extract using -xvf option the following error appears.

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

Its the option to be used for extracting tar package. Check the size of the package to verify if that package is valid. Because I have downloaded many files with 2KB or 5KB of no use.

So please check with that. Try from other link to download the respective package.
