How To Set Static IP and Manage Services in RHEL
Configuring Network Static IP Address and Manage Services
In this article we are going to learn how to Configure Network Static IP Address and manage services on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Requirements:
- It is necessary that you have already installed RHEL/CentOS 7.0
- Active RHEL 7.0 Subscriptions and Functional Repositories
To Set Hostname and Configure Static IP
Enter the following command to open the path /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and assign static IP.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# vim /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eno16777736
To edit file, before that check BOOTPROTO is set to static, ONBOOT statement is set as YES and not to change HWADDR and UUID default values. After making changes save and close the file.

To Enable DNS servers, just edit the resolv.conf file.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# vim /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver statement, add your DNS servers.
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
To alter the system hostname, just edit the /etc/hostname file and Hosts file.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# vim /etc/hostname
linuxhelp.com
[root@linuxhelp ~]# vim /etc/hosts
After the hostname is set you can check whether it is fully qualified domain name by running hostname -f command.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# hostname -s linuxhelp [root@linuxhelp ~]# hostname -f Linuxhelp1.com
Usage of Network Manager Text User Interface (nmtui)
The ‘ nmtui’ is a tool which gives a GUI interface to configure networking by controlling Network Manager, which aids editing advanced network settings such as activate or disable a connection, edit WI-FI connections, assign static IP addresses to Network Interfaces, create advanced Network interfaces like InfiniteBand, bridge, VLAN, bond.
To install nmtui use yum command.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# yum install NetworkManager-tui
To start nmtui, execute nmtui command and use arrow keys to navigate and click Enter to select an option.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# nmtui
You can directly edit the connection by mentioning the device name.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# nmtui edit eno16777736
[root@linuxhelp ~]# nmtui connect eno16777736
‘ eno16777736’ is my network interface name. You have to use your systems n/w interface name.
Network Interface is configured with a static IP address, so now restart your network and use ifconfig or ip command to view IP and finally test configuration using ping.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# systemctl restart network
After reboot use the new static IP configured to execute remote login with SSH.

To disable Unwanted System Services
To check the unwanted services we need to install net-tools and lsof tools.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# yum install net-tools

To show list of sockets
After installation, execute “ netstat” or “ lsof” command to check what services are running on server.

To disable service
To check the status of the service use systemctl command.
[root@linuxhelp ~]# systemctl status sshd
