UCARP is a portable userland implementation of the Common Address Redundancy Protocol, (CARP) (OpenBSD alternative to VRRP) introduced by the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). UCARP is a High Availability and Automatic IP Failover mechanism which allows a couple of host machines to share common virtual IP addresses. UCARP protocol offers disaster recovery, very low overhead, cryptographically signed messages, interoperability between different operating systems, ability to handle failover among LVS load balancers and no need for any dedicated extra network link between redundant hosts.
